how art can be used as a transformative experience to create more inclusive institutions?

As part of Sylvia Morgado’s community and participatory practice, the artist is currently on a PhD with the research project “Diversifying Audiences in UK Arts Institutions” at Oxford Brookes University, in collaboration with Modern Art Oxford. She invited people from diverse backgrounds to visit museums/ galleries in Oxford. On October 8, 2023 participants shared - through arts workshops and spoken word - their experience and what makes them feel welcome in these spaces. It was opportunity for exchange and for the general public to learn about issues regarding diversity and inclusion that not everyone is aware of.

the importance of having role models

Another outcome of Morgado’s PhD research is a documentary film in which she has been interviewing people who interact with and/or attend artist’s Maxwell Alexandre exhibitions and events in Rio de Janeiro to understand how the contact with his work impacts them. The findings of this thesis will be widely shared to the general public, also promoting exchange with museums and galleries in the UK and Brazil.
